Otava Yo turns Russian folk songs into powerful dance music, a new Russian Beat. The band “can take great concert halls by storm with their Slavic temperament and fire. . . an authentic example of what will happen if a classical Russian Ivan gets into a groove.”
(Kiviberg, Viljandi Folk Festival)

A group of folk musicians in St. Petersburg, spontaneously formed Otava Yo in 2003. They wanted to create new interpretations of Russian folk music, open to everyone with open ears (and legs), and to revive neglected tunes from bygone times.
Otava Yo play their music in a vigorous manner with uninhibited humour, mixing firely-played traditional Russian instruments with a look straight out of Gogol. Otava Yo aim to shatter the cliché that Russian folk music is staid and undanceable.
In October 2014 Otava Yo played an official showcase at Womex. The band’s video “Sumetckaya” went to No.1 on World Music Network’s February 2015 Video Chart and received great reviews and more then 12 million views. The new video “Oh, Dusya, my Marusya” – recieved awards on Maykop International film festival and NYC Indie Film Awards.
In 2016 Otava Yo played their first UK tour, played WOMAD and live on BBC Radio 3.
Apart from Russia, Otava Yo have performed in Mexico, France, Estonia, China, Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, Finland, Belgium, Norway, India, the USA, the UK, Italy, Denamrk, Iran and Japan.
Now Otava Yo works on new music video and new album which will be released in autumn 2018.
